I Met Them Briefly
(c) Susan Nalicat
I never met her-
I saw her in a pink truck on one
of Germany's autobahn,
Her radio was turned on so loudly I could hear
Suzi
Quatro's 'Rock Hard' song just blaring away-
I was a soldier back then
looking out from
my M118 Army Ambulance as I passed by -
We managed
to share a brief smile.
I never met him-
briefly releasing the handle
from his pump car-
He flipped me off with his curved fingers
as he passed
me by the railroad rail-
I was trying to repair the flat tire of my
vehicle-
briefly I let the tires go and-
managed to flip my fingers
back at him,
instantly we bonded and shared a smile as
he saluted me
and threw a kiss my way.
I met him briefly-
The young singer I said
'hello' to in Crocodile Club of Goeppingen-
I told him I would return
on Wednesday but never made it out-
On a last minute call I was sent
out to the field,
I returned back to the club but found him gone.
He
looked so sensitive- I hope he didn't think wrong of me.
I met them
briefly-
The two Italian boys and one German soldier-
Speaking only
in our native language we communicated and slept
at the Stuttgart bahnhof
benches, we weren’t ready to return home.
At 5 AM we had to go
our separate ways, in different trains,
waving from the window of my
train-
I waved good-bye to my new brothers,
knowing we may never meet
again.
